TEAM

DANIEL ESSOUN GWIRA

He is the founder of GWIRA LEGAL CONSULT (AMANFEL CHAMBERS). Daniel E. Gwira was a person who was principled by nature and it is with this background that he founded Amanfel Chambers to ensure that justice was done to all who were aggrieved. After completing Tutorial college, London and Cambridge university U. K, he proceeded to write his Bar exams at Kings Inn, Dublin, Ireland and was called to the Irish Bar in 1919. At the Bar exams he was the first ever black man to obtain First class honours and certificate of honour. On his return to Ghana immediately after he was admitted to the Irish Bar,

he established Amanfel chambers. Soon the chambers earned a reputation for handling large corporate clients like SCOA, CFAO, UTC at that time. It was in that capacity and with that reputation that he was selected by the then Chamber of Mines to join Sir. Roland Burrows in defence of the Chamber in the Mines Enquiry in 1947. Later he was one of the four eminent barristers who were appointed or elevated to the position of Commissioner of Assizes and Civil Pleas. He joined the Sierra Leone Judicial Service ( a commonwealth country) at their request and worked in that service for several years where he contributed immensely to the growth of their legal system before returning to Ghana.

KOBINA DANIEL GWIRA

He was the eldest son of Daniel Essoun Gwira both of rich and blessed memory. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland where he obtained a Diploma in Public Administration. He was bent on pursuing further courses to a Doctorate in Law at the University of Dublin but his father urged him to return home to Ghana after his call to the Irish Bar as a Barrister to take over his practice. Accordingly, he returned to his father’s Amanfel Chambers in Ghana immediately after his call in 1966 at Kings Inn, Dublin, Ireland. He plunged into active legal practice thereafter and took advantage of the Investment market and booming timber industry that existed at that time. Through him Amanfel Chambers became the most sought-after Law firm in the Western Region of Ghana that offered expert legal advice in Investment, business and commercial Law.

He became the lawyer for many of the timber Firms in the Western Region which most of them were owned by expatriates. He practiced for about fifteen years when he was appointed as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Sierra Leone where as a commonwealth country Queen Elizabeth II now of blessed memory received him there and handed him his letters of credence to commence his duties. This appointment was followed by his tenure as Ghana’s Ambassador to the Yugoslavia, Romania and Bulgaria during Kwame Nkrumah’s reign as the first president of Ghana. He remained in these seats till 1966 when after Kwame Nkrumah’s overthrow he left foreign service for Ghana. He was appointed a member of the Council of State in the government of President Limman of Ghana and continued to practice as a lawyer in Amanfel Chambers, Accra till he died in 2006.

DEREK DONALD GWIRA

He attended University of London, England where he obtained his Law Degree. He then proceeded to the Inns of Court School of Law, London, England where he passed his Bar exams and was called to the English Bar at Lincolns Inn, London in (1970). Prior to his call to the English Bar he worked for some years at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Africa Service (Bush House) at Aldwych London as a writer/broadcaster. He also worked as a Legal Officer at the National Carriers, London and at the Inland Revenue Department, London as a Tax Officer (Legal). He returned to Ghana to join Amanfel Chambers, when his father and brother were members of the chambers at that time.

Soon Derek’s astute legal practice caught the eyes of many companies. And soon Amanfel Chambers was engaged as the Legal Consultant to Ghana Cement Works (Ghacem) a giant Norwegian (now German) cement manufacturers.
